HOT WEATHER TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT

Keeping your dog cool in hot weather is the best way to combat heatstroke and keep them happy and comfortable. With rising temperatures and heatwaves continuing past the summer months it’s important to know what you can do to help your dog.

TIP #1 - Best Walking Times

Walk early! Morning is best, before 8 AM. Avoid midday heat and even late evenings during heatwaves. Keep activities light to prevent heatstroke.

TIP #2 - Hydration and Shade

Always ensure your dog has access to plenty of water and shade, even during short walks.

TIP #3 - Safe Temperatures

Temperatures below 20°C are generally safe for most dogs with no underlying health conditions. Above this, exercise caution, especially with physical activity.

TIP #4 - Tarmac Test

Can't hold the back of your hand on the tarmac for 5 seconds? Then it's too hot for your dog's paws.

TIP #5 - High-Risk Dogs

Be extra cautious with flat-faced breeds, overweight, elderly, or unwell dogs—they're more prone to heatstroke.

TIP #6 - Car Safety

Never leave your dog in a car - ever. Temperatures can skyrocket, and dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes.

TIP #7 - Harness Caution

Using a Halti harness? Ensure it doesn't restrict your dog’s ability to pant. The primary way dog’s lower their body temperature is through panting, if a harness is restricting their ability to pant then their chance of contracting heatstroke is increased.

TIP #8 - Cooling Treats

Offer cooling treats like ice cubes in water, dog safe frozen smoothies, or ice licks.

TIP #9 - Cooling Tech

Use fans or air conditioning to help your dog stay cool.

TIP #10 - Grooming

Regular grooming is crucial. Matted fur can trap heat and increase the risk of overheating.

TIP #11 - Sun Protection

Apply pet-safe suncream to light-furred or light-skinned dogs on sensitive areas like the nose, belly, and ears.

TIP #12 - Cool Towel

Offer a damp towel for your dog to lie on. Never cover them as it traps heat.

TIP #13 - Water Play

Set up a sprinkler or paddling pool to help them cool down. Always supervise playtime.

TIP #14 - Cooling Products

Invest in cooling products like vests or mats designed for dogs.

Whether it’s finding the best time of day for a cooler walk, keeping the water bowl filled, or experimenting with some cooling accessories, these little things can make a big difference. Just staying on top of it all shows your dog you’re looking out for them, and trust me, they’ll notice.
