Protecting dogs from animal Abuse
the statistics & How to report it
Animal abuse is a heartbreaking reality, but knowing what to do if you encounter it can make all the difference.
In 2022, the RSPCA received 42,690 reports of dog abuse. There were also 9,776 reports of intentional harm, meaning a staggering 27 dogs a day were cruelly treated - more than 1 every hour. This is an increase of 27% in just 3 years.
The data also showed:
A 22% increase in reports of beatings
A 15% increase in the number of animals killed in ‘suspicious circumstances’
The first 6 months of this year alone has seen cruelty cases increase by nearly 1,000, prompting the RSPCA to declare they are braced for an animal welfare crisis this summer.
What is animal cruelty?
The RSPCA defines animal cruelty as:
“An animal suffering as a result of a deliberate human act e.g. being beaten, or repeatedly subjected to a stressful situation”
What is animal neglect?
The RSPCA defines animal neglect as:
“An animal suffering because their needs are not being met e.g. not being fed, kept in a small cage all day. Neglect can be unintentional.
